Several Times Tonight

When I’m high above linoleum
And you talk
I never hear what you speak
But I always remember what you spoke
Still focused on the branches from that previous point
Until they wrap me up
Crossed in a silk spider knot
Sticking to my in sides
And when I cannot be silent
For another second,
I notice that you have turned away
On a subject that does not relate
To the way you made me feel

Like a Punch

It’s when I see you through a crowd of people
like sparked glints on a stream
that I decide to throw my punch on the table
Fruity and refreshing, it’s so twisty on my tongue but
I have this hunch
(After eyeing your dress curl like a finger)
I’m gonna need both my hands to express
in a quietish conductor way
that I need to be with you
that I want to stick to you
that you make my delicious fruity punch
taste like tears down my tubes

So when I fix my courage the room it seems to deepen
and like an unexpected hug from far
you are drawn down the dark river
through tuxedo caverns and the crystal clinks
winking flash of hither souls on and off
until the lights and sound are cut
by an employed pair of mustached lips telling me
“I am sorry sir-
would you want the punch to take home?”

Even talking is a trip
My finger on your plus
Fuck the yawny neighbors
They make the minus happen

How private, how personnel
Like a writer alone I listen

Today's so old so tomorrow
I think i'll search for lovely Naira
To make her hear what made me look

Inflation

50 cents to buy
A cup of Subway water
Which is not bad
All things considered
After all
When you screamed at me last night
"You crazy beast get out of my house!"
That ended up costing me
Subway fare
Which they just raised
to 2.25

Mourners

Push me to a place
Where modernity pulls the stones
So I can peer through the cracks
See where sunrised people drooped in black
Sit on benches in between
And paint their memories

In the Morning Time

In the morning time beneath blue sky I was spent
Hanging clothes in the breezy sunlight
Seven shirts and a stained sheet but I was thinking about last night
When you told me how I am
Like a dandelion, you said, with billow wings to spare
You didn't notice but I smiled
In spite of overwhelming aches from work that week
I guess I like when girls like you compare guys like me to weedy flowers
And before I could finish the hangings I ran out of pins for the sheet
So I wrapped the cloth around my neck and took off
Straight between gravel alleys looming
Past my piped truck and your laundry mat
Into the vast urban fields honking
Arms in a swing like I was whipping a kingdom of grass
The stained sheet billowing like a thousand seeds spreading
Like I could fly
It was like I could split apart and fly
